ISLAMABAD: In a major step, the Central Development Working Party (CDWP) on Thursday approved a Rs5.7 billion sports infrastructure development package for the SAF Games to be hosted by Pakistan next year.
The CDWP meeting, chaired by Deputy Chairman Planning Commission and Federal Minister for Planning, Development & Special Initiatives Ahsan Iqbal, reviewed the sports infrastructure development projects for the SAF Games scheduled to be held in April.
According to a press release issued on Thursday, the CDWP, following a detailed consideration, approved the proposed development package, marking a major milestone towards ensuring smooth, efficient and successful hosting of the regional games.
‘The approved projects include major upgradation of facilities at the Pakistan Sports Complex, Islamabad, as well as sports facilities in other cities,’ the release added. The developments will improve the quality, functionality and readiness of the venues required for hosting the regional multi-sport event.
Secretary of the Ministry of Inter-Provincial Coordination (IPC), Mohyuddin Ahmad Wani, termed the approval of the package a major achievement.
‘The approval of the Rs5.7 billion infrastructure package is a major step forward for the successful hosting of the SAF Games.
Insha Allah, the comprehensive upgradation of the Pakistan Sports Complex and other facilities across the country will ensure that our athletes and visiting teams are provided with quality facilities.
The venues will also continue to benefit Pakistan sports long after the Games,’ Wani said.
According to him, the IPC Ministry would work closely with the Planning Commission and all relevant stakeholders to ensure timely implementation and completion of the approved projects in line with the requirements of the SAF Games.
Pakistan hosted the SAF Games twice, in 1989 and 2004. The inaugural edition of the games was staged in Kathmandu in 1984.
