Visually-impaired job seekers stage demo

LAHORE: Dozens of visually-impaired people staged a protest rally here on Tuesday against, what they called, failure of the Punjab government to keep its promise of providing them jobs.
The protesters marched from Lorry Adda up to Azadi Chowk and threatened staging a sit-in on the Metro bus route, suspending its operations on Feb 17 if the government did not fulfill its promise by then.
The government had promised to give jobs to the visually-impaired protesters soon as per their quota three months ago.
The protesters said at least 2,700 vacancies for differently able persons existed in 17 departments, and out of these 640 were meant for the visually-impaired persons on a contract basis. So far, just 200 jobs have been given to such persons reportedly because of the go-slow policy of the departments concerned. Staff Reporter
