Constable, ‘robber’ injured in shootout

RAWALPINDI: One of the policemen, guarding polio vaccination team, and a suspected robber were injured during a shootout on Stadium Road on Friday.

However, the suspected robber was overpowered by the police while his accomplice managed to escape with Rs129,000 cash they snatched from a citizen.

The injured constable, Mohammad Yasir, was shifted to hospital where his condition was stable.

Constables Mohammad Yasir and Naeem Ahmed while visiting the cricket stadium area with the vaccination team observed two people fleeing after snatching cash from a citizen and the latter was shouting for help.

Responding to the victim’s call, Mohammad Yasir rushed to his rescue and tried to overpower one of the alleged robbers. On seeing his accomplice in trouble, the second one opened fire on the constable injuring him.

In retaliation, the other constable, Naeem Ahmed, fired at the robbers, injuring one who was overpowered. Police said the injured robber was taken into custody while police team was formed to arrest the other one.

The suspect arrested by police is a resident of Ratta Amral and was wanted by the police.
