Joint team to probe clash between police, army personnel

PESHAWAR: A clash took place between police officials and personnel of army in Yar Hussain area in Swabi district on Sunday night after which a joint inquiry committee was constituted to investigate the incident.

Mohammad Sohaib Ashraf, the Swabi district police officer, told Dawn that the joint inquiry committee would look into the matter and would decide as to who was at fault.

Sources in police said that police quick response force (QRF) erected blockade in the Yar Hussain area when an army pick-up vehicle appeared from tehsil Chota Lahor side that was stopped by police for checking.

A captain was also travelling along the army personnel.

The police action infuriated the army personnel, who were travelling in their official pickup.

They exchange hot words with the police that led to clash between them.

One of the policemen told this correspondent that about five personnel were injured but it was not clear whether they were from army or police.

Later, several army personnel reached Yar Hussain police station. However, sources said that Chota Lahor DSP Pashan Gul Khan succeeded to avert any serious clash between army and police.

The DPO, when contacted, said that the joint investigation team would probe the incident to ascertain as to what happened and who were responsible for it.

However, he did not say anything about timeframe for completion of investigation. Sources said that Mardan DIG Alam Khan Shinwari was also apprised about the incident. He held talks with DPO and discussed the incident.
