IO issued show-cause notice in BIEK corruption case

KARACHI: An anti-corruption court on Friday issued a show-cause notice to an investigating officer (IO) for producing a suspect in a case pertaining to the alleged corruption in theBoard of Intermediate Education Karachi (BIEK) after a delay of two days.

The Anti-Corruption Establishment produced Mohammad Adil Anwar, a daily-wage clerk at BIEK, before the court and sought his custody for questioning.

The judge of special anti-corruption (provincial) court, Gulshan Ara Chandio, came down hard on IO Jameel Ahmed Soomro for producing the suspect a couple of days after the arrest.

While issuing a showcause notice, the court observed that the suspect was shown to have been arrested during a raid at BIEK on Aug 9 and the IO was legally bound to produce him for remand the following day. Meanwhile, the court sent the suspect to prison on judicial remandand asked the IO to submit an investigation report.

The ACE alleged in the FIR that the deputy controller of examinations, BIEK, Dabeer Ahmed, with his staff, manipulated 2016 intermediate results of three students against a bribe of Rs30,000 per paper.

A case was registered under Sections 161 (gratification), 468 (forgery), and 34 of the PPC read with Section 5 (2) of the Prevention of Anti-corruption Act 1947 at the ACE police station.
