Work on irrigation canal resumes in Mohmand

MOHMAND: Construction work on the Right Bank Irrigation Canal (RBIC) of the Mohmand Dam project has resumed after resolution of a longstanding land acquisition dispute that had delayed the project since 2023.

The construction of the canal remained suspended due to the unavailability of the required land and resistance from residents.

The issue was resolved through coordinated and sustained efforts by the district administration, dam authorities and elders.

A ceremony was held at the canal site to mark the resumption of construction work.

Wapda officials, the deputy commissioner, representatives of the district administration, consultants, contractors and elders attended the event.

During the ceremony, the deputy commissioner handed over possession of 13 acres of land, out of the required 99 acres, to the dam administration. The administration also undertook to hand over the remaining 86 acres within the current month.

The RBIC will be around 5.6 kilometres long and will provide irrigation water to 5,000 acres of new agricultural land in Mohmand.

The right and left bank irrigation canals being constructed under the irrigation component of the Mohmand Dam project are expected to irrigate around 17,600 acres of land.
