AT protest against Zulfikarabad on 19th

THATTA: The Awami Tehreek has announced a big demonstration in Baghan on Friday (June 19) against allotment of 1,458 acres of coastal land in Keti Bandar and Kharo Chaan.

The allocation aims to revive the long-stalled Zulfikarabad mega city project.

Speaking at the Baghan Press Club, party leaders Noor Ahmed Katiar and Razag Chandio alleged the transfer belongs to a broader effort to revive the controversial scheme despite decades of local opposition. Successive governments have already earmarked vast stretches of land across several coastal dehs (vil-lages) in Thatta and Sujawal districts.

Official documents show the Zulfikarabad scheme envisages development across 1.32 million acres, covering the coastal talukas of Keti Bandar, Kharo Chaan, Shah Bandar, and Jati.

Theleadersarguedthat communities hold customary rights over these lands and creeks, regardless of formal records.

Continued land acquisition risks blocking fishermen, restricting grazing, and forcing mass migration. ‘People are losing their history, culture, and connection with the Indus Delta,’ they said, adding that the project also threatens a vital arid-zone mangrove ecosystem.
