THE WEEK THAT WAS Neem| Hum TV, Mondays 8.OOpm

Set in the heart of S Kashmir, Neem tells the story of sharp economic and class divisions. Zimal (Mawra Hocane) has just completed a degree in education and is determined to improve the educational levels in her village. She even asks her fiancé Shazil (Arsalan Naseer) to put off their wedding till she establishes her work.

Zimal may not have many resources but she has the patronage of the local landlord and belongs to a well respected Kashmiri family, all of which make her an impossible dream for the poor young man Ashhad (Ameer Gilani). Ashhad loves Zimal from afar but his destiny will lead him to the US, according to the teasers.

The villain of the piece is Karamat Khan (Syed Jibran), a cruel, vindictive man who uses his position as the son of the local landlord to dominate and control.

The choppy editing aside, the scenery is picturesque and the show moves at a good pace, giving us a good first episode. On the negative side, instead of illustrating their points, the writer and director take the route of lecturing and sermonising to the audience on equality and religion.
