Volunteer work

ABOUT six months ago, the Aunty Parl( in Karachi’s Clifton area was deprived of all its shady trees. While the trees were cut down, their stumps were not removed.

These stumps have now started growing again and are hampering the development oftrees planted byvolunteers attheir own expense.

The spread of stumps and the massive consumption of underground water by them is drying out some of the newly planted trees at a distance of a few feet.

The earlier these stumps are removed, the better it is for all those visiting the park.

While I was wall(ing in the park recently, I saw an educated man cutting the branches of the plants, which were five or six feet high. He was perspiring due to summer heat, but was still continuing quite efficiently. On my asking as to why he was cutting the branches, the answer made me salute him with gratitude and respect.

The man, an architect in his 40s, said he was cutting the branches to help the trees grow upward properly, and to provide shade to the visitors. I found the approach impressive and, indeed, worth emulating.
