KARACHI: The World Bank (WB) offered its support for development of the fisheries sector at a workshop held on Thursday at a local hotel where experts outlined the opportunities and challenges being faced in its growth.

The event, jointly organised by the Sindh fisheries department and the bank, was attended by government officials, academicians, fish farmers, representatives of non-governmental organisations working in the fisheries sector and the fisheries development commissioner, among other stakeholders.

Speaking at the workshop titled ‘Fisheries revitalisation and the blue economy’, senior environmental economist at the WB Pawan Patil expressed interest on the bank’s behalf in the development of Pakistan’s fisheries sector and offered assistance in this regard.

Pakistan had a lot of untapped fisheries resources, he said, adding that the bank could also facilitate in getting technical assistance from reputed international organisations in the field.
