THIS is with reference to the report `David Page a passionate South Asia watcher is no more` (Oct 13). I was truly devastated to learn of the passing of my dear friend David Page, a renowned journalist, author, broadcaster as well as champion of media freedom. He has left an indelible mark on the world of letters and journalism.

I was proud to have published his book, Satellites Over South Asia, for the launch of which he came to Karachi with William Crawley, his co-author. He remained my informal advisor on publishing. When Al Jazeera was launched, I told him its structure and presentation reminded me of BBC, he smiled knowingly, and said: `It would.` A passionate advocate for press freedom, David dedicated his life to promoting unbiased reporting as well as safeguarding journalists` rights. His tireless efforts through the Commonwealth Journalists Association (CJA) inspired countless journalists globally.

With a distinguished career spanning decades, David`s contributions to BBC, Channel 4 and other organisations earned him widespread respect. His commitment to truthful storytelling and unwavering support for journalists and those working for publishers in perilous environments were greatly respected, and will be deeply missed. He was ever ready to challenge and stand up against any kind of injustice and injury caused to journalists and those working for publishers.

David`s legacy continues through the countless lives he touched, including mine, and his fight for media freedom will endure as a testament to his unrelenting spirit. David`s impact on journalism, truth and justice will never fade and will continue to inspire others. I will greatly miss his friendship, support and advice.
