LAHORE: The Punjab government has introduced 18 new projects at a cost of Rs2.92 billion to control floods in the province.
IrrigationSecretaryAsadullah Khan says that Narowal, Sialkot and Sheikhupura localities are beingfocusedinthenewschemes to protect the population from floods in seasonal nullahs.
As a permanent solution to flooding of thelocalities,notonly the course of nullah Deg is being diverted but also protective dykes are being constructed at some points.
He says that flood works in Rajanpur, Dera Ghazi Khan and Muzaffargarh districts were already going on to avert loss of life and property because of flash floods and overflowing of the Indus during rainy season.
The Indus particularly inundates the area lying between Rakh Baghwala and Baitwa Gwar and Mithan Kot.
All the new and ongoing flood work schemes will cost the exchequer Rs19 billion, says the secretary.-Staff Reporter
