RAWALPINDI: Jamaat-i-Islami Punjab emir Dr Tariq Saleem on Thursday said that Jamaat-i-Islami would now mobilise public for a peaceful march and cautioned the government against creating difficulties for residents of Islamabad by blocking roads.
He said the party’s ongoing protest movement against petroleum levy has become a voice for people across the country, with sit-ins now being held in 41 cities.
Addressing participants at the JI sit-in in Rawalpindi, he said the party’s planned march to Islamabad would continue ‘come what may’.
He urged the authorities not to obstruct what he described as a peaceful and democratic struggle and called upon JI workers to intensify preparations for the next phase of the movement.
Dr Tariq Saleem said protest was a constitutional and democratic right and maintained that peaceful public resistance could not be stopped through administrative measures.
He was joined by JI Punjab North Secretary General Iqbal Khan, JI Rawalpindi City Ameer Syed Arif Shirazi, Rawalpindi District Ameer Raja Mohammad Jawad and Murree District Ameer Ghulam Ahmed Abbasi, who also addressed the gathering.
The JI Punjab emir said 33 days had passed since the nationwide sit-ins began, but the government had, in his view, failed to adequately respond to the difficulties being faced by ordinary citizens.
Dr. Tariq Saleem said the use of shipping containers or other measures would not deter the party from pursuing what it described as a peaceful political struggle.
He referred to JI’s previous protests and marches against agreements with Independent Power Producers (IPPs), claiming that the movement had resulted in relief for consumers on electricity bills.
