Frankfurt clip high-flying Freiburg’s wings in Bundesliga

BERLIN: Freiburg missed a chance to return to the top of the Bundesliga table on Saturday, after being held to a 2-2 draw at Eintracht Frankfurt.

Bayern Munich’s ruthless 7-0 win over Union Berlin on Friday put the Bavarians ahead of Freiburg atop the table, but the Black Forest dropped points for the first time this season as they remained second.

Several new members of Germany coach Jurgen Klopp’s 44-man squad shone on both sides in a see-sawing encounter.

Frankfurt’s Younes Ebnoutalib finished off a lovely team move to score 10 minutes in, just days after celebrating a surprise maiden Germany call-up.

Derry Scherhant, another of Klopp’s lesserknown new additions, levelled things up for Freiburg but Jonathan Burkardt edged Frankfurt back in front.

Scherhant created a second for Yuito Suzuki to grab Freiburg a point and leave them level with Bayern on 10 points.

West Ham loanee Niclas Fuellkrug continued his stunning form on his return to Germany, scoring for a third-straight Bundesliga match as hosts Werder Bremen came from two goals down to win 3-2 against Augsburg.

Fuellkrug levelled things up with a blistering long-range effort in the 86th minute, before former Bayern defender Mitchell Weiser blasted in a winner in stoppage time.

Elsewhere, Hamburg notched their first goal, win and points of the season in a comfortable 2-1 home victory over Cologne.

Albert Gronbaek laid on goals for Nicolas Capaldo and Yussuf Poulsen to help the hosts, one of the historical giants of German football, drag themselves off the bottom of the table.

Hamburg climbed past Borussia Moenchengladbach, who lost their fourth straight game in a wild 4-3 defeat by visitors Mainz.

Just days after bidding farewell to sacked coach Eugen Polanski, things went from bad to worse for the hosts. Gladbach also missed a pen-alty in the defeat and are now the only Bundesliga side without a point after four matchdays.

KANE HITS BUNDESLIGA CENTURY On Friday, Harry Kane scored twice in Bayern Munich’s demolition of Union, becoming the fastest player to reach 100 Bundesliga goals.

Kane scored his 100th and 101st goals in just 98 domestic games, obliterating the previous record set by Cologne’s Dieter Mueller in 1977 by 31 games.

It’s the latest record that the England captain has torn up during his time in Munich, having already become the fastest Bayern player to reach 75, 100 and 150 goals in all competitions.

Kane’s double means he now has scored 156 goals in 156 games for Bayern in domestic and international games combined an unparalleled statistic.

‘I’m very proud to reach 101 Bundesliga goals,’ Kane told Sky Germany.

‘In the short time I’ve been here, I’ve loved every second of it. When I’m playing with these players Michael (Olise), Luis (Diaz) and Jamal (Musiala),1’m going to get chances.

‘To have more goals than games is obviously a great stat to have,’ he added.

When asked about his Bayern contract, which expires at the end of the season, and whether he’ll still be at the club when the Champions League final returns to Munich in 2028, Kane said: ‘I’m extremely happy here.

‘The talks are ongoing and they’ll be ongoing for the near future. You can see the way I’m playing and the way I connect with the fans.

‘Munich in 2028? Maybe. It’ll be a special one.

Despite Kane’s double, it was Olise who was the star on the night, scoring a fine hat-trick against the winless Bundesliga strugglers.

Jamal Musiala and recent signing 1smael Saibari were also on target for the defending champions.-AFP
