Army surge ahead at National Games

QUETTA: Pakistan Army swatted Wapda aside in the baseball final to restore their supremacy at the top of the medals table of the National Games on Saturday.

Wapda had momentarily movedlevel with their rivals on the number of golds on Friday but Army ended the day eight clear thanks to their pugilists, who scooped seven of them in the late night events.

Gold number 34 for Army came when they thrashed Wapda 15-0 in the fifth innings of the baseball final with Saqib scoring three home runs andWaseem Akram getting another three.

Arsalan Jamshed, Mohammad Hussain, Nazeer and Asad Ali got two each.

Boxing came to a close on Thursday with Army reigning supreme. Bilawal Zia won the men`s light heavyweight (75-80kg) contest while Ibrar Ali clinched gold in the men`s light welterweight (60-63.5kg).Ibrahim was the winner in the men`s lightweight (57-60kg) while Mohammad Qasim prevailed in the men`s bantamweight (51-54kg) competition.

Among women`s contests, Dua Zehra clinched gold in the bantamweight (52-54kg), Rimsha Ghaffar won the flyweight (50-52kg) andSahre Atif was victorious in the light flyweight (48-50kg).

Humna Mumtaz delivered the first gold for Higher Education Commission when she won the women`s minimum (45-48kg) event while Nageebullah of Wapda won the men`s featherweight (54-57kg) competition.
