SCA opposes wheat import

By Our Staff Correspondent 2020-01-22
HYDERABAD: The Sindh Chamber of Agriculture (SCA) has urged the federal government to rescind its decision to import 300,000 tonnes of wheat from Ukraine as the Pakistan Agriculture Storage and Supplies Corporation (Passco) has provided 300,000 tonnes wheat while Sindh also has its stocks.

In a statement issued here on Tuesday, SCA president Miran Mohammad Shah said that around 1.1m tonnes of wheat, including 300,000 tonnes from Passco and 800,000 tonnes of Sindh`s stocks were available in Sindh. He said that a bumper wheat crop was expected in Sindh again and added that from Feb 20 onwards, wheat crop would be at harvesting stage in Mirpurkhas division.

He did not appreciate federal government`s decision to import wheat from Ukraine in view of current flour crisis.

He said that it was not a wise decision of the federal government because Ukrainian wheat would be available by March and by then wheat crop`s harvesting in Sindh would be in full swing.
