LAHORE, June 22: The women opposition members walked out of the Punjab Assembly session in protest against vulgar remarks used against them during the assembly session on Thursday by treasury member Sheikh Allauddin.
Led by Sajida Mir, the women members chanted slogans against Mr Allauddin and then left the house.
They came out of the assembly building and staged a sit-in at Charing Cross (The Mall) where dozens of civil society activists also joined them.
They demanded of the Lahore High Court chief justice and the Election Commission (Punjab office) to suspend Allauddin`s membership for passing derogatory remarks against the women members of the opposition.
`We will knock the door ofthe Supreme Court if Allauddin`s membership was not cancelled by the quarters concerned,` said Sajida Mir while speaking on the occasion.
Speaker Rana Iqbal sent provincial ministers Nadeem Kamran, Ali Ahmad Aulakh and some other opposition members to persuade and bring back the protesting women members to the session.
Meanwhile, some treasury women members also started a protest in the session, demanding suspension of MPA Samina Khawar Hayat for hurling shoe on an elderly woman member of treasury benches.
Later, ministers succeeded in bringing back opposition members to the session.
Speaking on the occasion, Law Minister Rana Sanaullah said the protest was the democratic right ofevery member, but everyone should be careful while behaving with anyone during the assembly session.
He suggested forming a three-member committee to investigate the issue. On this, the speaker announced constituting a committee to probe the issue and submit its recommendations to him soon.
LAW MINISTER: Talking to the media outside the Punjab Assembly, Law Minister Rana Sanaullah said coalition partners of the PPP-led government had sold themselves to President Asif Ali Zardari as they supported all his decisions.
`I think the coalition partners are equally involved in the sins of the PPP-led government,` he said and added that a corrupt prime minister was the only qualification for President Zardari.
