Bars flay arrest of political activists and lawyers

LAHORE: The Lahore High Court Bar Association (LHCBA) and the Lahore Bar Association (LBA) condemned government actions, detentions and alleged harassment of political activists and legal professionals ahead of a planned march on Islamabad scheduled for Sept 27.

At a joint press conference, the leadership of bar associations criticised the government’s tactics against PTl leaders, workers, and women, including the detention of former prime minister Imran Khan’s sisters.

They alleged that the administration was violating fundamental rights and resorting to authoritarian measures against peaceful political expression.

They also expressed concern over reports of target lists compiled under the Maintenance of Public Order.

They alleged that these lists reportedly include the names of senior lawyers, including LHCBA President Babar Murtaza Khan and LBA President Irfan Hayat Bajwa.

Demanding immediate relief, the associations called on the government to allow the PTl to exercise its constitutional right to hold a peaceful protest on Sept 27.

They urged the authorities to ensure due process, adhere to transparent legal mechanisms and release all detained political figures, workers, and citizens.
