Imaan`s family, legal team concerned over jail medical facilities

By Ikram Junaidi 2026-08-25
ISLAMABAD: The family and legal team of lawyers Advocate Imaan Zainab Mazari-Hazir and Advocate Hadi Ali Chatta have expressed concern over medical facilities at Adiala Jail.

Both lawyers, who are husband and wife, have been incarcerated at Adiala Jail since Jan 23, 2026, and their appeals against the `controversial` sentence, which was marred by due process violations, have still not been heard by the Islamabad High Court.

`We have been satisfied with weekly meetings at the jail since then. However, we are compelled to issue this statement because of health issues that Imaan has been facing for the past three weeks, which raises questions about medical facilities at the jail, the family and legal team said.

`Imaan had first complained about heavy bleeding from her gums, but there was no dentist available to see her in the jail. We arranged for medicine to be sent to her after consulting our dentist, but not all of the contents reached her.

`The following week, she was suffering from stomach problems, and medical attention remained inadequate,` they alleged.

`Worse, a medicine, Zedron, meant primarily for cancer patients, which specifically says it should not be given to women of childbearing age, was administered to her to stop her nausea and vomiting,` they said.

`For the past week, Imaan has had a chest infection, which is highly concerning. They did a blood test that showed a high level of white blood cells, revealing an infection. She needs to have a chest X-ray, but jail authorities have still not had a chest X-ray done to determine the cause of the infection and rule out dangerous diseases like tuberculosis,` they stated.

`Our concern is compounded by the alarming fact that inmates in the women`s section of Adiala Jail who have been diagnosed with infectious diseases are not isolated and mix with other inmates as well as children. The women`s medical facilities and availability of doctors leave a lot to be desired,` they said.

`This is an issue of a health crisis in the jail, and the well-being of prisoners is the responsibility of the state, which it must not take lightly,` they stated.

The family and legal team also reiterated that all these health issues could be avoided if their suspension of sentence applications were heard in a timely manner.

They requested the jail authorities and the government to ensure that Imaan`s chest X-ray was conducted at the earliest, adequate medical facilities were provided to all women prisoners, including dental care, and detainees with infectious diseases were isolated or quarantined with dignity to protect other detainees.
