KARACHI:Inspector General of Police (IGP) Sindh Javed Alam Odho on Thursday visited Sindh Madressatul Islam University (SMIU) where he stressed that improving society must also be one of the students’ objectives.
During his visit, the IGP was received by SMIU Vice Chancellor Dr Mujeeb Sahrai. The IGP toured the varsity’s Jinnah Museum, Khan Bahadur Hassanally Effendi Library, TV Studio, Hashmat Lodhi Youth Development Centre, IT Tower, Business Incubation Centre and the AI Lab.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr Odho said it was a matter of great honour for him to visit the historicinstitution, where Quaid-i-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah received his early education.
He said he felt a ‘double sense of joy’ because his grandfather and great-grandfather had also studied at the institution in the 1920s and 1930s.
Addressing the students, the IGP urged them to follow SMIU’s motto, ‘Enter to Learn, Go Forth to Serve’, and said education should not only help young people build careers and support their families but also encourage them to contribute to society and serve the country.
Mr Odho also stressed the need for young people to combine modern education with a sense of social responsibility.
He expressed concern over the growing vulnerability of young people, including students, to drugabuse and said parents, teachers and fellow students all had a role to play in helping them stay away from drugs and guiding them towards a constructive future.
During his visit to the AI Lab, the IGP said SMIU and Sindh Police would collaborate in the field of artificial intelligence. He said an MoU between the two institutions would be signed soon.
Mr Odho also praised Dr Mujeeb Sahrai for his efforts to modernise the historic institution and improve its academic and physical facilities.
The vice chancellor said the university was committed to preserving its historical identity while ensuring that students received modern education and professional training in line with contemporary requirements.
