Environment dept signs MoU on climate action

LAHORE: The Environment Protection and Climate Change Department, Punjab, and the University of Lahore on Friday signed a strategic framework to strengthen cooperation in environmentalprotection, climate action, sustainability, research and practical initiatives.

The signing ceremony, held at the UoL, also featured the inauguration of a Miyawaki forest aimed at promoting urban plantation, biodiversity and climate resilience.

Speaking on the occasion, Punjab Environment Secretary Silwat Saeed said the department would work with the university to promote technology-based environmental education and practical training, while seeking academic and technical cooperation on air quality management.

She said environmental pollution could not be addressed without bringing stakeholders together, particularly universities, experts and young people.

‘Climate change is no longer a distant threat; it is at our doorstep,’ Ms Saeed said, adding thatrecent heat waves, water shortages and the approaching smog season highlighted the seriousness of the challenges facing Punjab.

She said environmental problems are affecting public health, economy, productivity and quality of life, and stressed the need for translating environmental research into practical measures and measurable targets.

She proposed establishing climate laboratories in collaboration with academia and experts to identify air pollution hotspots in Lahore and develop scientifically based solutions.

She said there would be growing demand for environmental engineers, climate finance specialists, and experts in environmental law in future, making collaboration between educational institutions and government departments increasingly important.

UoL Board of Governors member Amara Owais thanked the environment department for facilitating visits by students and faculty to its offices.

The participants agreed to strengthen cooperation in research, education, air-quality monitoring and practical environmental initiatives.
