PAT to move SC for ECP dissolution

By Khalid Hasnain 2013-01-29
LAHORE, Jan 28: Sticking to its demand for dissolution of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), the Pakistan Awami Tehrik has finally decided to fight a legal battle by filing a writ petition in the Supreme Court seeking declaration of the existing four ECP provincial members` appointment as unconstitutional.

The decision was taken in a consultative meeting presided over by PAT chairman Dr Tahirul Qadri at the central secretariat of Tehrik-i-Minhajul Quran here at Model Town, according to party sources.

Dr Qadri told reporters in his Sunday` news conference that the PAT leadership would be at liberty to go to the Supreme Court or adopt any other way to get its demand about ECP dissolution accepted after a delegation of the ruling coalition partners led by PML-Q chief Chaudhry Shujat Hussain termed it unconstitutional. `Under Section 2-A of Article 213 of the constitution it is mandatory for the parliamentary committee to hear every candidate (three nominations from each province) before appointing four provincial ECP members. Though we have no objection on the ECP chief (Fakhuruddin G Ibrahim) appointment, the appointment of ECP`s four members is illegal because the committee didn`t hear all the 12 nominees submitted by the provinces,` Qadri had said.
