The critical binary

2024-07-01
IT is but natural that children admire theirparents because they are the ones who initially introduce them to the real world. Also, they are the ones who give the children their first glimpse of the spiritual world. Children draw the binaries of right and wrong from the behaviour of their parents who mostly guide them throughout their lives.

Considering the wholesome nourishment of a child, the power of a parent seems almost infinite. As such, if the parents fail to give their child adequate time and treat them well, the child is bound to miss a real-life experience.

I recently witnessed an incident thatshocked me to the very core. A young child about seven or eight years old was admitted to a hospital for some ailment.

One day I saw his father, who had earlier not been there. He came from nowhere and started abusing his wife in front of everyone in the entire ward. The child immediately started crying. He was not crying because he was sick, but because his father`s language was too mean to his beloved mother. Imagine what kind of a torture that woman would be suffering at home inside the four walls. Imagine the emotional and psychological trauma the child must have been suffering from.

Is this the manner in which we want to raise our children? In Western countries, women and children both know their rights, but in Pakistan, they just accept every injustice as their luck. This must come to an end.
