Initial design of Peshawar rapid bus service approved

PESHAWAR: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Pervez Khattak on Monday approved the preliminary design of the Peshawar rapid bus service, a mass transit scheme, for initial three corridors.

Among these corridors extendable to 15 are the one, Central Corridor, from Chamkani to Khyber Bazaar, Dabgari Garden, Cantonment, Tehkal, University Town, Board Bazaar andHayatabad with service areas in Karkhano Market and entire city routes, the second from Chamkani to the Southern Ring Road to Hayatabad, and the third one, Northern Corridor, for the areas connecting through northern Ring Road.

The approval was granted during a meeting chaired by the CM, said a statement issued here.

The chief minister also approved the `implementation strategy for demonstration of pilot project` and ordered the hiring of professionals from the market on competitive package.

Earlier, a detailed presentation was given to the participants on the pledged foreign investment for the project, and project`s quality and duration.

The chief minister approved theoverall communication strategy for the project.

He ordered the recruitment of a chief executive for the project to facilitate the project`s implementation.

`We cannot afford the waste of time in the start of the project. We want this unique project to cost less with no compromise on the quality of the project,` he said.

Mr. Khattak said it was a project that his government thought about, discussed it at different forums and went for a collective decision.

`We have set targets though we have a lot ofissues but there is no match to our commitment to integrate the entire Peshawar valley through a unique transporting system so that the congestion and unruly vehicular traffic is controlled to the relief of the people,he said.

The chief minister said there would be a separate unit for the project and that he would monitor the project himself.

He said nothing was dearer to him than a public facilitation project like the Rapid Bus Service for Peshawar and he would not allow anybody to create hurdles to it.

Mr. Khattak ordered the construction of an overhead bridge in Chamkani.

The meeting was attended by senior minister for local government Inayatullah, chief secretary Amjad Ali Khan, additional chief secretary Azam Khan, special assistant to CM on law Arif Yousaf, administrative secretaries, Asian Development Bank country director Dr Weiner Liepach and relevant officials.
