Farmers protest denial of dues

MUZAFFARGARH: A good number of farmers on Tuesday staged a sit-in in front of a sugar mill for allegedly denying payment of their dues for the last three months.

It is learnt that Haseeb Waqas Sugar Mills and Tandlianwala sugar mills have stopped payments to the farmers.

The angry farmers locked the gates of Haseeb Waqas Sugar Mills in Jatoi tehsil, scaring the officials away. A.B. Shaheen, the general manager of Haseeb Waqas sugar mills, said no official was inside the mills.

He said the mills had topay Rs80 million to farmers who have now stopped providing sugarcane.

Ghulam Faree d, a f armer of Jatoi, said he had visited the DC office many times for help in getting Rs1 million by the mills but to no avail. He said the mills was violating the Supreme Court order to clear dues.

Officialsat Tandlianwala sugar mill say the payment has been stopped by the head office.

Ghulam Abbas, a farmer of Muzaffargarh tehsil, said the district administration failed to bound the mills to fairly weigh the product and now there is no payment.

Deputy Commissioner Saif Anwar Jappa said he would look into the matter.
