SUKKUR: Paramedical staff of the intensive care unit (ICU) of Sukkur Civil Hospital as well as the doctors doing house job will be posted at the Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation (SIUT) to get professional training.

This was decided at a meeting held at Commissioner`s House on Monday to resolve problems confronting the Ghulam Mohammad Mahar Medical College (GMMMC) and the Sukkur Civil Hospital, which was the college`s teaching hospital.

Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly Syed Khurshid Ahmed Shah, who presided over the meeting, said the government was opening big medical institutions in the district and it required highly experienced and qualified doctors and paramedical staff to run them in an efficient manner. He regretted that lack of good governance in the administration of GMMMC and its teaching hospital and internal feuds among doctors were badly affecting the institutions` performance.

He urged doctors to end their differences and work sincerely and devotedly for the betterment of the medical institutions. The Sindh government had enhanced the budget of Sukkur Civil Hospital from Rs60 million to Rs200 million for provision of quality healthcare facilities to people, he said.

The meeting, which was attended by Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto Medical University (SMBBMU) Vice Chancellor Prof Ghulam Asghar Channa, Sukkur Commissioner Mohammad Abbas Baloch, Civil Hospital`s medical superintendent Dr Abdul Aziz Memon and others, decided that Dr Aftab Ahmed Soomro would work as principal of the medical college till a permanent principal was posted.

The meeting unanimously approved the proposal that a management board should be constituted for playing a role in resolving problems of the medical college and its teaching hospital.

It advised the vice chancellor of SMBBMU to hold meetings every month with the college principal and the administration so that all issues could be resolved on a priority basis.

SMBBMU VC Prof Channa told the meeting that a civil engineer and an electrical engineer had been posted and a bio-medical engineer would be appointed soon in the medical college.

He said the college had received an amount of Rs56m in fees and Rs650m from the government.
