Street crimes

2023-04-05
THERE has been a sharp increase in street crimes in Karachi`s Saadi Town area which has raised concerns among the residents. Many are voicing their frustration with the apparent ineffectiveness of law enforcement agencies in addressing the problem.

The spike in crime is largely attributable to a combination of two factors; rising unemployment rates and economic instability due to unemployment, and the cost of doing business in the country.

In addition, a number of unauthorised occupants are taking advantage of the relatively relaxed security measures in certain areas aoround the town, which makes it a whole lot easier for themto target innocent, unsuspecting victims.

Despite increased patrolling by law-enforcement agencies and a random crackdown on criminal activities have not helped the cause of the residents who want more aggressive action, such as the permanent deployment of police and Rangers in the area even if it is for short-term basis.

Others are advocating for more comprehensive solutions, such as forming neighbourhood watch groups, and working together to keep their communities safe.

Better education opportunities and job training programmes could also help reduce unemployment, and it would in time discourage criminal activities.
