Bus terminal at GCU

2012-07-08
WHY should one do a thing where a violent reaction is expected? In cooperation with Turkey, the chief minister of Punjab has tried to solve the transport problem of the people of Lahore by introducing a rapid mass transit bus service in Lahore at the cost of $2.5 billion.

This would initially run from Kahna to Shahdara on the Ferozepur Road via Mozang chungi, the secretariat, district courts and Data Darbar with conveniently-located stops or terminals.

In this great venture, Traffic Engineering and Transport PlanningAgency has planned a terminal at Logia Gardens in the vicinity of the Government College University, Lahore, without caring for the historical background of this great alma mater which is about 150 years old. The institute has produced great scholars, scientists, engineers, generals and sportsmen, including Allama Iqbal, Faiz Ahmad Faiz, Nobel laureate Dr Abdus Salam and the architect of our nuclear bomb Dr Samar Mubarakmand.

By having a bus terminal inside this great institution would definitely spoil the beauty and historical value of thisplace. It would give a look of a general bus stand where hundreds of people would embark or disembark all the time thereby disturbing the peace of students and the teaching faculty.

The chief minister is requested to have pity on this historical institution and look for an alternative arrangement for the terminal. It could be located either around Nasir Bagh or at the far end of the district courts.

Anyone who is associated with the college (now university) will never approve of it.
