ISLAMABAD: An illegal juice factory located in Shahzad Town police area was sealed on Friday and its manager arrested.

The factory was using chemicals to manufacture juices which were dangerous for children.

After raiding the factory, food inspector Mohammad Ashraf told Dawn that the factory was established in an agro farm in Tarlai. The raid was conducted under the supervision of Assistant Commissioner Secretariat Hasan Waqar Cheema.

`An ordinary person doesn`t know that majority of the substandard fruit juices have ingredients that are injurious to health. In this factory we could not find any natural fruit being extracted; chemicals were stored in big drums. Four women were busy filling them in bottles and sealing them, he said.

A case under Pure Food Act has been registered against the suspect.

Gastroenterologist at Pims Dr Waseem Khawaja told Dawn that substandard juices can cause cancer, hepatitis and many other diseases. A Reporter
