KARACHI: The 36-member global council of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) elected Malik Amin Aslam Khan, former minister of state for environment, as its vice president for the period 2017-20 at its meeting held in Gland, Switzerland, on Wednesday.

`He has been elected as the vice president of the IUCN for the second consecutive term. In this role, Mr Khan will advise and closely assist IUCN president Zhang Xinsheng of China who was elected at the World Conservation Congress held in Hawaii last year,` said an IUCN press release.

With experience in political governance and in the field of climate change and development, Malik Amin chairs the Green Growth Initiative in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and also serves as the organisation`s regional councilor for South Asia.
