NO ACCOUNTABILITY: The fire

NO ACCOUNTABILITY: The fire tragedy at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (Pims) in Islamabad, which took away 14 newborns from their parents, is indeed heart-breaking. The latestincidentunderscores a continuous pattern of government incompetence. Widespread systemic failure in governance is making citizens bear the brunt of misrule. The scapegoat has been some bureaucrat who has been suspended but would likely be posted to some other department once the outrage dies down.

Unfortunately, this has been the tradition in this country. Those with connections or political clout will remain untouched.

It seems the word ‘accountability’ does not exist in the Constitution of the state.

Shaista Anwar Kirmani Karachi CLOSING UNIVERSITY CAMPUS: The Umerkot campus of the Sindh Agriculture University has remained closed for the last six months due to ongoing, prolonged issues. As a result, students have been suffering academically and facing considerable difficulties. Despite the campus being closed, students and their parents continue to face financial burdens, including university fee and transport-related challans for university points. The students have been protesting peacefully in Umerkot to demand their basic right to education and restoration of the academic activities on the campus. Their demand is simple and legitimate: they want their university reopened so that they may continue their education. It is extremely important that the administration resumes regular classes and academic activities of the university without any further delay.

Shafique Samoo Umerkot UNDUE CONFLICT: Some videos across social media platforms recently showed a conflict between armed forces personnel and members of the local Aman Committee over the setting up of a medical camp for civilians in a government school. Such confrontations can only lead to nothing but unrest in the area and, therefore, must be avoided at all costs.
