2019-06-10
LAHORE: The development of medical science and modern technology have made it possible to treat brain issues without opening the head of a patient, which not only lessens pain, but also minimises the treatment time, said head of Punjab Institute of Neuro Sciences (PINS) and renowned neurosurgeon, Prof Dr Khalid Mahmood.

While speaking on World Brain Tumour Day, Prof Mahmood said that modern treatment for patients with brain problems has been started at PINS where the latest MRI machine was functioning.

According to a handout, he said that citizens should adopt a simple lifestyle, exercise, get proper sleep and avoid mental pressure to save themselves from brain diseases. He clarified that every tumour is not dangerous and most of them are curable or can be reduced to an extent that is not life-threatening.

Prof Mahmood further said that in all the main hospitals of Punjab, treatment for brain tumours was available and f acilities for neurosurgery provided without any discrimination, but the number of neurosurgeons was not up to the mark.

Only 28 professors and 300 neurosurgeons were working in public sector hospitals across the country, which was not suf ficient for the entire population, he added.

He also stressed the need for creating awareness among the masses as they should know that continuous headache and spells of vomiting are main symptoms for which people should immediately contact doctors.
