Army man found dead in prison

PESHAWAR: A prisoner stated to be a convicted army personnel died under mysterious circumstances in Peshawar central prison on Thursday.

Official sources said that the prisoner, Badruddin Ghori, who was sentenced to three-month imprisonment by a court martial, had committed suicide by drowning himself in a water tank.

The deceased, stated to be around 30, was sent to prison on March 3, 2014 by the Army authorities, informing the prison officials that he was convicted under the Army Act by a court martial and sentenced to three months imprisonment.

A prison official told Dawn that after the occurrence the prison authorities informed district and sessions judge Shehbar Khan following which he deputed a magistrate, Zafarullah Khan Mohmand, for an inquiry into the matter. He added that the magistrate visited the prison and recorded statements of different persons and ordered that the body be sent for autopsy.

He said that apparently the prisoner had committed suicide, but exact cause of his death would be ascertained after conducting autopsy. The deceased belonged to Latifabad town of Hyderabad district. The official said that they were not aware of the crime for which the deceased was convicted.
