JIT given three weeks to probe Toba liquor case

LAHORE: Punjab Minister for Minorities and Human Rights Khalil Tahir Sandhu says a joint investigation team on the Toba Tek Singh liquor episode has been set up and it will complete its work in three weeks.

At least 34 members of Christian community from Mubarakabad area had died after taking ‘tainted’ liquor on the occasion of Christmas.

In a statement issued here on Wednesday, the minister said the JIT comprising various agencies would complete investigations in 20 days and those found guilty would be punished.

Mr Sandhu said the JIT would also quiz Chuttiana police officials about their possible involvement in the tragic incident. He said the government would provide financial assistance to the families of the victims at the earliest.

The survivors are being treated at the Toba DHQ and Allied hospitals, Faisalabad.

Mr Sandhu said if needed the patients would be shifted to Lahore hospitals.
