Ramazan and Eid shopping go side by side

LAHORE: A number of city markets witnessed a huge rush of people on Sunday ahead of Eidul Fitr.

Similarly, all 27 Ramazan bazaars established by the city district government were also reported to be almost full of people who reached there to buy various commodities such as pulses, rice, spices and meat ahead of Eid.

Since the Eid shopping continued for the last five days or so, it picked up momentum on Sunday. The markets where a huge rush of people was observed included Anarkali, Karim Block (lqbal Town), Shah Alam Market, Azam Market, GT road`s inside markets, Panorama, Mall Road, MM Alam Road, mini, main and liberty markets in Gulberg, Model Town Link Road, Madina Market and College Road in Township, G-1 market, Khokhar Chowk and Allah Hoo Chowk in Johar Town, Shahdra, Ravi Road, Walled City, Green Town, Wapda Town, Moon markets (in Iqbal Town and Gulshan-iRavi), Yateem Khana and PIA Society Road near Wapda Town.

Besides the garments` outlets, the seasonal vendors also placed stalls of Mehndi, bangles, toys and low-cost garments in markets.

`Soon after mid-Ramazan every year, I set up a stall and sell garments to the lowincome people. I bring garments from Shah Alam wholesale market,` Anwar, a vendor in Karim Block market, told Dawn.

He said he would start selling Mehndi and some girls-related items within the next few days ahead of Chand Raat.

He said he was selling garments on a `reasonable` profit. On the other hand, Hamza, a buyer, complained of high rates the vendors were charging at the garments` outlets of various brands.

`Last year, the prices of garments were low. Now I have learnt that it increased by 30 per cent,` he added.

He urged the government to monitor and regulate prices of garments.
