Compensation sought for slain journalist`s family

SWABI: District union of journalists staged a protest demonstration here on Tuesday against the killing of a journalist in Haripur district.

Led by its president Ihsanul Haq Bamkhelvi, they gathered at their district office, near the city police station, and marched from there to Karnal Sher Khan Chowk while holding placards inscribed with various slogans, demanding justice for the slain journalist.

On Sunday, Bakhshish Illahi, the bureau chief of an Urdu daily, was gunned down in broad daylight by unidentified assailants when he was on way to work in Haripur district headquarters.

The journalists demanded arrest of the killers and award of exemplary punishment to them. They also called for providing financial help to the family of the deceased.

Addressing the protesters, Mr Bamkhelvi said that it was responsibility of both the federal and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa governments to provide security to journalists and let them perform their professional duty with peace of mind.

35 SUSPECTS HELD: District police have arrested 35 suspects in a search operation launched after the grenade attack on the house of Swabi DSP Izhar Shah on Monday.

The grenade attack at the police of ficer`s residence in the heart of the city during the daytime had put the district police in a fix as to how the militants reached the high security zone, where residences and offices of tops officials are housed,and thenescapeduntraced.

When contacted, district police officer Mohammad Sohaib Ashraf told this correspondent that in the operation 35 suspects from different regions were arrested. He said the arrested persons would be thoroughly investigated and those innocent would be set free.

Sources said the police action was aimed at reaching the culprits involved in the grenade attack.
