GILGIT: The ruling PML-N candidate Mohammad Imran Wakeel won the by-election held in the Tangir valley constituency on Tuesday. Only two candidates contested the by-poll, and the second contestant was from JUI-F.

The seat had fallen vacant after the death of then Forest Minister Haji Mohammad Wakeel in May. Twenty-six polling stations had been set up across the constituency, and police and other law-enforcement agencies personnel had been deployed to keep calm during the polls.

According to unofficial results, Mohammad Wakeel, who is brother of the deceased, secured 3,633 votes while JUI-F’s Haji Gulbar Khan got 2,553 votes.

Meanwhile, the Gilgit-Baltistan Election Commission on Wednesday announced the schedule for by-elections on GBLA’s Hunza constituency. According to a press release, the by-election will be held on August 29.

The returning officers will collect the papers from candidates on July 17 and 18; scrutiny of papers will be completed by July 24 and the candidates could lodge appeals against rejection of papers by July 28.
