Gujranwala to hold cricket league

GUJRAT: The firstever Punjab Premier League (PPL) cricket event will be held in Gujranwala from Oct 4 to 11 at the Jinnah Stadium.

Eight teams from across the province will participate in the event and at least 15 matches will be organised under floodlights.

The announcement was made by Gujranwala Commissioner Naveed Haider Sheerazi at a news conference on Saturday.

Former cricketer Taufiq Umar, Gujranwala Deputy Commissioner Tariq Qureshi and PPL Chief Executive Officer Abdul Rauf were also present on the occasion.

A memorandum of understanding betweenthe Gujranwala district administration and the PPL management was also signed.

The commissioner said preparations for the event had already been initiated at the Jinnah Stadium. He said national and international players from across the country could become part of the teams hailing from Punjab.

The hockey and football leagues as well as a wrestling competition will also be held in Gujranwala following the cricket league, the commissioner said.

DC Tariq Qureshi said that the no-objection certificate for the event had also been obtained by the administration.

Taufiq Umar said every squad would consist of 15 players, with at least three players drawn from the under-19 clubs.
