Prisoners protest ‘withdrawal of facilities’

2017-06-17
KARACHI: Prison police on Friday tear-gassed a group of prisoners who were protesting against frequent power cuts and shortage of water inside the Karachi central jail, according to officials.

Around 60 prisoners came out from their barracks and protested against “withdrawal of facilities” after the recent escape of two under-trial prisoners, said Gulshan SP Ghulam Murtaza Bhutto.

The officer said that the prison police lobbed tear-gas shells to disperse the mob. Rangers and Frontier Corps personnel eventually managed to control the situation. The protesters returned to their barracks after the Prisons IG assured them he would look into their grievances.—Staff Reporter
