MQM worker awarded life imprisonment

KARACHl: An antiterrorism court sentenced on Monday an accused to life imprisonment in a targeted killing case.

Ramiz Shaikh alias Faizan, said to be a political activist, was found guilty of killing a local leader of a rival political party, Barkat Ali, outside his house in April 2013 in an Orangi Town locality.

The judge of ATC-Vll, who conducted the trial at the judicial complex inside the central prison, read out the conviction order after recording evidence of witnesses and concluding arguments from both sides.

According to the prosecution, the accused was a worker of Muttahida Qaumi Movement and he, along with his absconding accomplices, had gunned down the local leader of the Awami National Party.

A case was lodged under Sections 302 (premeditated murder) and 34 (common intention) of Pakistan Penal Code read with Section 7 of the Anti-Terrorism Act, 1997, at Pirabad police station.

The Rangers had arrested the accused last year and detained him under 90-day preventive detention. Later, he was handed over to the police.

The police said that the accused was a target killer and was allegedly involved in several cases of targeted killings.

Meanwhile, another ATC handed down on Monday seven years` imprisonment to two extortionists.
