Taseer vigil attack suspect gets bail

By Our Staff Reporter 2015-08-20
LAHORE: A Lahore High Court division bench on Wednesday granted bail to a suspect involved in attacking participants in a candlelit vigil held on the 5th death anniversary of Punjab`s slain governor Salman Taseer this year on Jan 4 at Liberty Chowk.

The bench headed by Justice Muhammad Anwarul Haq directed the suspect, Mumtaz Sindhi, to furnish two bail bonds of Rs200,000 each for his release.

The suspect`s counsel argued before the bench that the police had no direct evidence against his client to establish his role in the attack. He said the trial court acquitted some of the co-suspects on the same ground.

Therefore, he asked the bench to release his client on bail.

A public prosecutor opposed the bail plea and told the bench that challan had been submitted against the suspect/petitioner and the trial court had also indicted him. He said the suspect was identified through video of the attack. He said release of the suspect on bail would prejudice the proceedings before the trial court.

The bench, however, granted bail to the suspect against furnishing of bail bonds.
