Tribesmen complain of water shortage

PESHAWAR: The elders from Mandori area of Kurram Agency have complained about the shortage of water and said a water scheme was launched five years ago but the contractor left it incomplete with the political administration f ailing to act against him.

Haji Zahidur Rehman, Mohammad Jamil and Alam Khan told reporters at the Peshawar Press Club on Thursday that the people of various areas of Kurram Agency, especially the residents of Mir Mast and Parao villages, faced an acute shortage of drinking water but the federal government had ignored their misery and didn`t ensure the completion of a water project being executed in the region.

They said work on a solar water scheme was initiated five years ago but the contractor didn`t complete itandleft.

The elders said the local residents contacted the political administration time and again to seek its intervention, but to no avail.

They said water shortage had forced the people to begin staging protest demonstrations outside the Governor`s House in Peshawar as well as in Islamabad for corrective measures.

`It is no more possible for us to continue fetching water from far-off areas as the shortage is fast worsening. It is the duty of our elected representatives and political administration to resolve the issue at the earliest,` an elder said.

The elders asked KP Governor Iqbal Zafar Jhagra to take notice of the water shortage and order its immediate resolution on humanitarian grounds. Bureau
