MANSEHRA: Daily wagers in upper parts of Hazara division are without work for the last one week due to intermittent rains in the region, creating financial problems for them.
`We are without work for the last one week as rains have completely halted construction activity in the region,` said Mohammad Adnan, a daily wager, who along with dozens of his colleagues, usually gathers at the Khatm-i-Nobuwat chowk here to find out work.Mr Adnan said daily wagers had already been finding less work during winter as people usually didn`t hire them because of shorter days.
`My family is starving because I have got no work during last week,` said Mr Adnan and asked the government to launch workers welfare projects and also provide them stipends when they were out of work.
Jamshed, another worker, said that a large number of his colleagues would return without finding work these days. He said that both the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-iInsaf and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz had made the tall claims to launch public welfare schemes for the poor if they were voted to power, but after coming into power, both the parties didn`t implement their pre-poll agenda.
`People have been disappointed by the attitude and policies of the provincial and federal governments,` said Mr Jamshed.
The daily wager said that the Benazir Income Support Programme had contributed little towards lifting the lot of the poor people and demanded of the federal and provincial governments to launch public welfare schemes.
The labourers also demanded benefits and compensations on the pattern of the workers in industries and other sectors.
