Embassy driver`s bail plea dismissed

ISLAMABAD: A court here on Friday dismissed the post-arrest bail petition of an employee of the Norwegian embassy charged with fraudulently drawing a hefty amount from the embassy for medical treatment of his wife.

Additional District and Sessions Judge Mohammad Sohail dismissed the bail petition. Babar Rashid, a resident of Bhara Kahu, worked with the Norwegian embassy as driver.

He had drawn Rs16.5 million from the embassy for the treatment of his wife, a cancer patient. However, he availed the Health Card facility for her treatment and deposited only Rs900 only with the hospital.According to the FIR registered with the Secretariat police on the complaint of the embassy, the accused presented fake medical bills to the embassy. The FIR stated that he prepared fake stamps of the health officials for the fraudulent activity and cheated a foreign mission. It said the accused tarnished the image of the country.

Tahir Kazim, Director Law of the Police, who has supervised the investigation, informed the court that the police had recoveredthelaptopwhichwasusedbytheaccused for preparing fake and bogus medical bills and stamps used for forgery. Witnesses also testified against him, he added.

The judge observed that the case was of `exceptional nature` and ruled that the accused was not entitled to the relief of bail and dismissed the plea.
