Electrocution sparks protest

NAROWAL: A seven-year-old boy was electrocuted while playing on the roof of his house here on Sunday.

Usman, son of labourer Muhammad Altaf of Antowaali village (Shakargarh), visited his paternal grandparents in Siddiquepura.

Usman was playing at the roof of the house when he was electrocuted by 11 kv wires.

After the incident, family members placed the body on Circular Road, Narowal, and raised slogans against Gepco. The protest resulted in traffic blockade from Narowal to other cities.

Locals Muhammad Naveed, Muhammad Aslam and Kamran said 11 kv wires were passing over houses of people and during the last three years, five people Muhammad Amir, Ali Raza, Amanat Ali, Muhammad Ali and Junaid Iqbal suffered injuries. They said they had time and again lodged complaints with the respective authorities for removal of the wires but to no avail. The demonstrators demanded that police register a [murder] case against SDO and EXEN.

Later, MPA Khwaja Waseem Butt and Municipal Committee Chairman Pir Syed Azherul Hassan managed dispersal of the crowd by assuring the protesters of action.
