‘Shalamar Gardens won’t be added to danger list’

2017-07-10
LAHORE: Chairman of the steering committee for Orange Line Metro Train, Khawaja Ahmad Hassaan, has claimed that the World Heritage Committee in its 41st session currently under way in Poland has scrapped a proposal for including Shalamar Gardens in the List of World Heritage in Danger.

According to a press release of the LDA issued here on Sunday, Hassaan claimed this was as a result of effective presentation of technical data and relevant reports by Pakistan at the forum.

Quoting LDA’s chief engineer, who is leading an official team to present Punjab government’s stance at the committee, Hassaan claimed that acknowledging Pakistan’s stance on state of conservation of historical sites, the committee neither objected to the present alignment of the train’s track outside Shalamar Gardens nor has it asked for altering the track at this point.

He further claimed that after thoroughly examining the technical data, heritage impact assessment report, vibration report and other relevant research studies about the train project, the world body discarded the proposed draft decision forwarded by the critics of the project. It deleted nine out of the 13 points of the draft decisions while two points were modified in favour of Pakistan, he added.
