Potential threat

2024-03-12
WITH the advancement in technology, we carry many cordless gadgets that are powered by batteries. These batterieskeep our devices active and enable us to access information, communicate or navigate through locations. It is hard to imagine life without these devices today.

This technological advancement has introduced the rather lesser known hazard of lithium ion batteries. Many people are not aware that these batteries can actually cause fires.

They are not only used in cellphones, but also in the scooties at homes or the battery-operated trolleys at workplaces.

The common mistake we make is to leave these batteries charging overnight near kitchen, or inside overheated cars parked under the sun.

The lithium ion batteries have an uncontrolled self-heating tendency. It means that they continue to heat up even when there is no sign of fire, and reignite even if the related fires are put off. It is important to take precautions to protect ourselves. We must keep these gadgets away from heating sources and avoid overcharging them.

Besides, we should establish charging points at carefully selected and isolated locations to discourage fire-related incidents. It is strongly recommended to encourage the use of alternatives to lithium ion batteries to avoid accidents.
