Ramazan Package announced

LAHORE Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif on Thursday gave approval to the Ramazan Package worth billions of rupees for providing relief to the people in the month of fasting.

Under the package, flour bags would be provided to the citizens at concessionary rates in Ramazan Bazaars and open market and the government would give a subsidy of Rs3.5bn on this scheme.

A 20kg flour bag would be available in the open market with the concession of Rs90 as compared to the market price and while the concession would be Rs130 in SastayRamazan Bazaars.

The chief minister gave approval to the package while presiding over a meeting through a video link at the Civil Secretariat, says a handout.

Speaking on the occasion, Shahbaz said that under the package, flour, sugar, pulses, ghee, vegetables and fruit would be available to the people at concessionary rates. He said 318 Sastay Ramazan Bazaars would be set up in the province while 17 Model Bazaars would also be converted into Sastay Ramazan Bazaars. He said sugar would be available at a price eight rupees less than the market rate.

Shahbaz announced that the agriculture department would set up 335 fair price shops while 147 green channels would also be opened for the farmers to sell their produce. He said that Utility Stores Corporationwould also establish its stalls in Ramazan Bazaars that would start functioning three days before the start of the holy month.

The chief minister issued orders for action against profiteers and hoarders, especially of pulses and other essential items.

He asked all the ministers and secretaries to check prices of essential commodities during Ramazan and no compromise would be made on the quality of subsidised flour.

The chief minister said there should not be any shortage of essential commodities, fruits or vegetables and in case of a threat of shortage, arrangements should be immediately made for their import.

He said 2,000 Madni Dasterkhwans would be set up across the province for free Iftar.
