Psychiatric body team visits KEMU

LAHORE: World Psychiatric Association President Prof Dr Afzal Javed along with a delegation of senior medics visited the King Edward Medical University here on Thursday.

Prof Dr Tanzeem Haider, who has received an award for recognition of his outstanding services by Queen Elizabeth, was also among the visiting delegation.

KEMU Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Khalid Masood Gondal and other senior faculty members received the delegation.

A seminar was also arranged at the Department of Psychiatry where the participants attended a talk on` Future of Psychiatry`. They discussed the latest developments in the world regarding early diagnosis, effective management and rehabilitation focused treatment.

The participants also discussed acuteshortage of mental health professionals andstressedtheneedforincreasingprofessionals through inspiring medical students.

Dr Gondal said psychiatry was a part of other social sciences as well such as psychology, history, anthropology and sociology. He stressed upon the need to flourish this discipline in Pakistan by producing qualified young medics to meet the shortage.

Later, the visiting delegation held a meeting with Vice Chancellor Prof Khalid Masood Gondal, which was also attended by Prof Aftab Asif, Prof Abdul Shakoor, Prof Shahryar Jovinda, Prof Anjum Bashir, Prof Altar Qadir, Prof Sumira Qambar, Dr Ayesha Rashid, Brig Prof Shahid, Dr Ali Madeeh Hashmi, Dr Nazish Imran and Prof Dr Saira Afzal.

Mr Gondal apprised the visitors of recent advances in medical education, research activities and publications and use of information technology at the KEMU.
