Bilawal to contest NA by-election

By Syed Irfan Raza 2016-11-24
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari has agreed to contest a byelection or the general election, whichever is earlier, in order to become a member of the opposition in the National Assembly, a PPP leader told Dawn after a meeting of its parliamentarians in Islamabad on Wednesday.

Farhatullah Babar, the PPP spokesman, said a number of important issues were discussed at the meeting.

In reply to a question about the party`s plans to launch an agitation against the government, the spokesman said the PPP had decided to begin a `movement against the government` if four demands laid down by Mr BhuttoZardari regarding the Panamagate scam were not accepted by Dec 27.

`If the government does not meet our four demands we will be on the streets after Dec 27,` he said. `We will definitely build pressure on the government vis-à-vis the Panama Papers leaks concerning Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.

In a separate meeting with party workers hailing from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the PPP chairman asked them to strengthen the hands of the new provincial set-up announced by him on Tuesday in order to meet the challenges that lay ahead.

`I stand with this organisation and ask everyone to support it unreservedly,` he said.

The PPP chairman said that he would undertake a tour of KP af ter the events in connection with the party`s founding day celebrations beginning on Nov 30 were over.

`I feel that the space for the PPP is growing in the province after the voters` recent disillusionment with a party,` Mr Bhutto-Zardari said in a veiled reference to the Tehreek-i-Insaf.
